Two Kinds

How would you feel if you couldn’t make your own decisions? If you were told to be someone you’re not? In this short story “Two Kinds" by Amy tan the literature wasn’t easy to pick out, you really needed to pick out the minor details. One thing that I was trying to find was the connection with the main character, which helped because she stood out a lot in her own way.

Mother and daughters relationships should be strong and healthy, unlike in this short story the main character Ni-kan and her mother had a very unhealthy relationship which is one thing that personally can’t relate to my moms and my relationship. Once the story went on and it was getting toward the end I could relate to Ni-Kan a little better by her strength in telling her mom that she didn’t want to be famous she didn’t want to be someone else other then herself, Ni-kan just wanted to be who she was not a genius, not a dancer, or not a piano player. You could tell her mother was disappointed at Ni-kan for not doing well on her first performance of playing piano on "page 25"when her mother walked right past her in silence and you could feel how disappointed she was by her face looking down on Ni-kan.

That’s one of the reasons why its Comedy it might of started off in a normal everyday life, but then Ni-kan makes a small conflict by her thinking she didn’t want to be someone she's not it all turned around. The plot line isn't the only reason why it’s a comedy the characteristics is a big part for it being comedy, for one its realistic and for two the main character Ni-kan is in control because, by the end of the story Ni-kan’s mom is not telling her what to be or what to do with her life.

This book had a lot of thought and creativity in it. I didn’t really like it though because, it was boring it didn’t have much adventure to it. If there was a choice for me to read it again probably wouldn't be my first choice. This book did have a great meaning to it, just be you.
